I noticed how much the kids liked him and tried him out, I just couldn't stomach it, never went back. It took me two years of occasional listening to get into Death Grips, I could see that there was something there but couldn't catch it, finally clicked. I can't even see a glimmer of Hope in a whole Post album.
I hate that my son and his friends are obsessed with Post Malone. PM is like the anthem writer for middle class white kids frustrated with the tyranny of high school teachers... I've debated sending him this article, but I fear it would only entrench his stance.
With some luck he'll end up like me: hating every band I liked before I was 20. There's a dark path though. I know of like two Korn fans who are semi functional adults in 2018 and I was surprised they existed both times I heard about their musical taste. For this generation I think the dark path involves facial tattoos. Those aren't bad odds though for people moving beyond shitty music. My non scientific or rigorous sampling can be a beacon.
I've never even heard the name before. Weird. I didn't think I was THAT out of touch! But that writer has a real gift... That's Laurie Penny-grade work, right there. "...What Post Malone is selling is the chill-bro relatability of the third-most-sensitive member of a frat house..."
