Initial instinct: I don't like this.
Measured reaction: pending.
If this news has you looking for an alternative, I recommend checking out some significantly more open source options: Gitlab: https://about.gitlab.com/ NotABug: https://notabug.org/ Gitea: https://gitea.io/en-us/
I have free accounts at both gitlab and github. Their web interfaces seem pretty much the same to me, though I'm no expert. Gitlab has free private repositories too. So does bitbucket.
Kinda 'meh' about this. Github was always a business. I'd be down for an opensource federated alternative, and hopefully one will emerge, but the fact that a proprietary platform is changing hands isn't really an oh shit moment to me. There was always the chance that github could tell me to get stuffed at the drop of a hat anyways.
I don't have a direct dog in this fight...the only time I've ever formally used Github is for the new web page we're doing for the kung fu school. Even then, that's only because my compatriot is a Professional Developer, so that's what he's used to. So in the short-term I don't care. Long-term, I'm sure MS will find a way to fuck it up through sheer arrogance (Exhibit A). If I were to do a for-real software project for myself, GitLab is absoulely where I'd be doing it. Still, it's hard to be super worked up about this, given all the alternatives that are already out there.
