I'm finally replacing my 7-year-old desktop/primary gaming appliance. Because I'm lazy, and because video cards have gone through the roof thanks to cryptocurrency (looking at you, #etherium), I went through a system builder.
Interestingly, they said it wouldn't ship until the 18th, but I got an e-mail that it shipped today (ETA the 12th).
So. I have not had anything modern for some time, so I'm wondering what I need to add to the queue. So far, I have:
- Doom
- Subnautica
- Dirt 4
- The Witcher 3
- Watch_dogs 2
- Just Cause 3
Anything else?
The Witcher 3 will easily take you 500 hours or longer if you get "side-quest-itis" May be the best game of the 2010's. If you get the Witcher 3, get it from GOG, not Steam. Speaking of GOG and CD Projekt Red... Cyberpunk 2077 is coming out soon. Looks like the hype is building, the game is getting finalized and it will be out this year. This is going to be my next big gaming purchase once it is out. DO NOT PREORDER VIDEO GAMES! Kerbal space Program is not that expensive and fun as hell. 100 hours of play time is an easy target. I judge a game by how long it takes me to get bored with it... I have 3500 hours into KSP from back when the game cost $7, back in 2011? 2012? The Expansion adds parts, the ability to add and make missions, and is not needed unless you are into that. If you are into map reading simulators, I like Galactic Civilization 3 Like most 4x games, the end game becomes tedious, but the early and mid games make the playthrough worthwhile. Civ4 is still my favorite conquer the world game, and Civ6 feels off to me. Not sure why; the game is pretty and after being out a few years the real problems and bugs are fixed. Banished is a chill little problem solver. If you ever played the city builder games (and all of them are on GOG BTW) this will feel like a modern remake. Good graphics, rational choices, and everything works well. Speaking of city builders, Cities:Skylines is a better SimCity that anything since SimCity4
I need to get back into Kerbal ... I played it for a little while a couple years ago, but it was starting to feel like Tutorial Simulator than something I was actually playing myself :) Probably worth another look, though, and if nothing else would probably be a good distract-me-from-work game. I love strategy. I bought GalCiv3 during a sale and liked it, but then Stellaris came and totally hooked me. Probably worth looking at again, but my priorities first are Endless Legend (now that I'll have a machine that can really run it) and Endless Space II. CivV is my jam, and yeah, Civ6 still isn't there yet. Banished is awesome, I bought it at release. Colonial Charter is a must. Cities: Skylines is another I bought at release (thanks to the pre-release let's plays), and I love it. I bought After Dark, but after the total rip-off that was Snowfall (which I didn't buy), I haven't picked up any DLC. I'm fine with expansions (I have all of them but the newest for Stellaris), but the ones for Cities have seemed wildly overpriced to me. Meanwhile, I'm cautiously excited about Cyberpunk 2077, but given how long it's been in development will be cautious. And I never pre-order :)
Thanks for the reminder!Cyberpunk 2077 is coming out soon.

I've seen those, and although Rocket League looks pretty fun, I'm not generally into online shooters anymore. The communities are always terrible, and I don't have enough time to sink to get good enough to be remotely competitive (even on pubs).
All of the three games are enjoyable at any skill level. With Fortnite there isn't a community in chat, and with the other two you're always placed at people with very similar skill levels and the communities are generally nice. It is not at all like League of Legends, just to name an example.
That's good, because people on the internet tend to be pretty lame. But good, and I'll keep my eye out for a sale or something once I get through the backlog.
And PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds (PUBG), if you're interested in that type of stuff.Fortnite BR
Some...I've typically followed what Quill18 uses.
Far Cry 5. Haven't played, but the hype says the game's the shit. Stellaris. It has DLCtitis like many of Paradox' titles, but it's very diverse. Lots of options to fiddle with during the multiple playthroughs. In fact, any latest Paradox title: Europa Universalis IV, Hearts of Iron IV, Crusader Kings II... Alternatively, Endless Space II (a competitor to Stellaris) and/or Endless Legend (quite a unique strategy with a system based on Endless Space). Civilization VI... Am I getting drastically out of your interest borders?
Haha, I currently have 216 hours in Stellaris :) I liked HoI IV well enough although it gets kind of repetitive, and CK2 I'm just starting to get into. Endless Space II is one I've been meaning to check out, as I liked the first one. Thanks for the reminder. And Endless Legend is definitely going on the list, as I really like it, but it runs like ass on my current machine. But no, these are typically the kinds of things I play.
Not sure if it's quite your style, but if you like RPGs, you may like Evoland 2. Found it during a Steam sale, and have been waiting for a chance to recommend it to someone. It's usually pretty cheap, and is stylistically interesting - it's schtick is that it's a time travelling game that switches between different eras of RPG styles, from Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy to Pokemon and Hearthstone. Also, The Witness.
Divinity Original Sin 2 is also a great RPG.
The first one has been on my Steam wishlist forever...I didn't know there was a sequel, so I'll have to check it out. The Witness seems like a love-it-or-hate-it thing, and I haven't found myself particularly drawn to it. Blow's stuff always seems opaque for opacity's sake. But this does remind me that I need to get back into The Talos Principle.
Depends on what you like: I've put 300+ hours in Rainbow Six: Siege over the last two years, and it is a fantastic choice if you enjoy extremely intense, competitive shooters. Cities Skylines is another fantastic choice if you like city builders. Dolphin Emulator will now probably be able to run GameCube games at full speed at 1080/1440 enhanced resolutions.
I love Cities Skylines, even if most of the DLC seems to suck (after the disappointment that was Snowfall, I haven't bought any). R6 Siege always looked really interesting to me. How is it for a filthy casual? I hadn't even thought about emulation! That's definitely something I'll have to look at, since the new machine is pretty dang beefy.
Siege has a steep learning curve, but the destruction and strategy involved sets it apart from anything else out there. It take practice and time to do anything cool, but it is so satisfying to pull off a victory you shouldn't have. Watch a site called isthereanydeal for a sale of you're unsure, don't buy the Starter Edition any more. For Dolphin, PCSX2, and I think RPCS3 (experimental PS3 emulator) processor power matters more than graphics card, but a current i5 should run the first two well enough.
PCSX2 especially I'll have to look at. My new box has an 8700K, so I should be good :Dcurrent i5
