- All public schools in Kentucky and many in Oklahoma were closed on Monday as thousands of teachers walked out to strike for better wages.
...
Teachers in Arizona are also considering a strike over their demands for a 20 percent salary increase.
Chickens are finally coming home to roost in the red states.
All the states where these protests are happening have been Republican-controlled for a long time. This in turn means that they've gone out of their way to gut infrastructure, public spending, etc., including on things like education. And now it's coming back to bite them in the ass, because teachers are finally sick of it. The situation in Oklahoma is a good example. Education funding was cut by 30% over the last decade, schools can't even be maintained, and teachers are drastically underpaid. Republicans have made a religion out of cutting any and all government spending, and they're finally paying a price for it.
As far as I see it, these states have underfunded education for a long time, and done a poor job of recognizing collective bargaining rights for teachers. Absent a better way to resolve their demands, eventually people will become desperate enough to participate in a mass strike.
I wounder if anything will come of this, it seems like the unions are actually working against the teachers and not communicating their demands. The teachers go out and ask for basic shit like healthcare and class supplies and somehow that becomes a demand for a 20% raise which is a lot less popular. The unions at the local level might work Ok but at the state level they really suck and it’s unclear if they are working for or against teachers
