I don't agree with this article, in that, I am not sure if these types of regulations make sense anymore. Careers are not what they once were, and neither are employers. I don't think that either the left or the right have figured this out, and I don't consider myself a liberal or a conservative in the classic sense. I am not sure that we can change people's values regarding free time, however. If they had more money to spend, they'd probably value it more.
...so that we can spend more time driving for Uber, taking that 2nd job at Domino's, etc. If the protected class has a wage and hours guarantee but the unprotected class doesn't, the unprotected class will just hustle harder, making the protected class feel ever more threatened. In the immediate term, we should be fighting for things like shorter workweeks, steeply increased overtime pay, lower retirement ages, expanded social security, family leave, paid vacation, paid sick leave, child allowances, and sabbaticals.
This is what the new economy is being built around. Don't like shopping? Trunk club will send you clothes, blue apron will send you food, Amazon will send you products. Don't have time to wait for a fix it man? Amazon will do the scheduling and let them into your house. Hate your commute? Uber has you covered with autonomous vehicles. It's the premise of the book the support economy. As automation takes over the service economy, humans will move into the support economy - offering to help those that can afford it achieve a greater level of self actualization by freeing them from their obligations towards unfulfilling actions.they end up using it for unfulfilling things, don't value it.
