Happy Easter!
Thought it might be a fun idea to ask this again, it's been a while (or Google is letting me down, who knows) and user-inactivated won't be doing it again sadly.
What have you been watching? Series, movies, documentaries, great or terrible, anything goes.
I'm not a big tv or movie watcher, but once in a while I get hooked and want to binge watch every episode. This week I've been watching Bojack Horseman - I just finished season two. I don't think it's for everyone but I do really like its humour, its character development and the good balance between the two.
Shameless. A ton of people kept telling me to watch it. I grew up with no money, but not stealing disability checks to get by no money. My girlfriend on the other hand said it's hard to watch because it reminds her of how she grew up so I'm watching it to get a little better idea of what it was like for her.
The O. J. Simpson murder trial had always interested me, so when the new miniseries, "The American People V. O.J. Simpson" popped up on Netflix, it was a must-watch. I'm about 2/3 of the way through. It's been really interesting watching the stumbles and failures of the prosecution, combined with the smarmy evil combined intelligence of the defense, as the case progresses. Warning: we know how this ends; it's a tragedy. Has anyone here seen Black Mirror? I started an episode but it seemed pretty downer. I also re-watched The Shining (on Netflix) and now re-reading the novel to compare differences first-hand.
That OJ one has been on my watchlist, but I wonder if it's interesting for non-Americans. I only know OJ because people keep referring to his trial. That's pretty much the premise. Some episodes are good at being confrontational, others less so. Between them they're unrelated so you can watch them in pretty much any order.Has anyone here seen Black Mirror? It's definitely worth it as a non-American. The only thing I knew about OJ Simpson before I went in was that he was famous and involved in this big murder case. I didn't even know he was specifically an American Football player. Great acting all-round and it stays exciting throughout even though you know how it ends. That OJ one has been on my watchlist, but I wonder if it's interesting for non-Americans.
Ooh! I love binge-watching TV series! Enjoyed the new Westworld very very much, exspecially episodes 1-8. The last 2 episodes got bogged down. A western with androids and an awesome vision of themepark that showcases human nature in often dark ways. Very good scifi. Will watch season 2 when it comes out. No release date yet so maybe not until 2018. Finished season 1 of Outlander, very good. WWII nurse goes back in time to 18th century Scotland and makes a life for herself. Interesting story, historically accurate (maybe?), a lot of sex that makes it almost soft-porn. Started season 2 but couldn't get into it as much. Switched to... Masters of Sex. Also very good. Drama based on the first two sex researchers in the 60s. I think it does a good job of showing the process, trials and excitement of real science. Great characters. Less sex than you'd think given the theme. Got halfway through season one and then we visited a puppy we will be getting next week. His name is Jon Snow and my gf has never seen GoT, thus we got sidetracked on this series and started watching... Game of Thrones. I'm seeing it for the second time, my gf for the first and she was hooked during the first episode. Thus some major binge-watching over easter. Starting season 3 tonight. Surprising how much more I'm getting out of the series by watching again. Many small details that are important later that you don't notice if you don't know what you're seeing.
I loved westworld. I'm so excited for the second season.
Crashing with Pete Holmes on HBO. I'm surprised he curses in it. I thought he was too square to ever say 'fuck.' You're the Worst is probably my favorite show that isn't animated (muthafuckin' Rick and Morty!) I will finish Girls when I'm done with Crashing. Bob's Burgers. The Last Man on Earth. I started This Is Us and intend to finish it at some point. I watch a lot of TV for someone who doesn't watch TV. Then there are shows on my to-do list and shows I'm done with and waiting for the next season...
This Old House season 38. A few years ago we went back and started watching at the season where Kevin joins them. It's fun to watch them slowly gain confidence in him and allow him to actually do stuff. We have been skipping the seasons without Tommy, though. Also got the first season of No Reservations checked out from the library.
'Allo 'Allo - It's an old British sitcom about a man who owns a restaurant during WWII that is a favorite spot for German officers while also being an operation front for the French resistance. It's not very good, but it is very fun. Brooklyn 99 - It's a police sitcom and everyone on that show seems to absolutely lover working on it. It's light hearted, hilarious, and everyone on there has an amazing sense of comedic timing and delivery. Samurai Jack - I'm slowly re watching it when the mood strikes. Right behind Batman: The Animated Series, it's in my opinion the second best cartoon series ever made. They're neck and neck though. Random stuff - Superstore, Green Acres, I Love Lucy, The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, The Rifleman, and on and on.
Vikings is still a favorite for my wife and I. Lagertha is an amazing character arc. Penny Dreadful is super clever, and - now that it has lived past two seasons - the authors seem to be really pushing the envelope. It's a trite idea - 1880/90's London, and all the classic "monster" characters and thrown into one plot together: Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Grey, Wolfman, witches, Dr Jekyll, no less than THREE of Frankenstein's "monsters", Dracula, an Alan Quartermain character, etc... - but it is done really well. And there are LONG character arcs that don't resolve neatly at the end of a season, but arc into the next season. Even the bit parts - Sembenni, the blind girl, the junior witches, etc - are really chewy, interesting people. Abstract is a great look at eight individual creative people - an architect, a car designer, a graphic designer, etc - and HOW they work, where their ideas come from, and then some really nice videography of their work. The Architect is by far the best episode, but all of them are interesting in their own right. Ash vs The Evil Dead is my secret shame. Just started watching it. I'm not a blood-and-guts or horror movie kind of guy, but Bruce Campbell is just my kind of funny, and I love it. Cornball blood and guts. Ain't nobody can do it like Ash!
I've been binging on Netflix lately. Wynona Earp - Surprisingly decent. will watch season 2 when it comes out. Hemlock Grove - still reserving judgement, but pretty positive. Best werewolf transformation i've seen personally. Abstract - another netflix made docu-series. Really interesting, actually. movies: Fifth Element - i appreciated this rewatch. real good. 10 Cloverfield Lane - Also worth a rewatch. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is killer in this movie. edit: Oh, I watched the Grand Budapest Hotel. It was great!
I definitely think it gains legs throughout the season, but I find the actor who plays Agent Dolls is really not an engaging actor.
Been re-watching The Wire, and it is great as always. I'm trying Patriot (on Amazon), and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It doesn't annoy me like virtually every show that tries to be funny does, and it's not quite as predictable as I expected (although still is somewhat). I dunno if it's something I'll be keeping with. Next on the list: Fortitude, also on Amazon.
