I only say this because I know that you are a political and a science junkie... but, wouldn't it be nice if one of the candidates for the presidency announced that they wanted to see an increase in federal funding for space exploration partnered with the private sector?
There was a feature on Science Friday the other day about how science will not be on the debate agenda this fall, just as it wasn't in '08. To my knowledge, in the last two election cycles the only candidates that have mentioned science as something their administration would pursue were Clinton and Gingrich.

I heard it, with David Gergan of CNN...?
I called in to pose a comment and got through. I waited as long as I could but I had a 2:30 appointment and had do drop the call. I was going to mention the Curiosity Mars Rover -landing mechanism -video mike posted here (and give a hubski shout-out) and state how it was nice seeing a well marketed video from NASA. I think a big reason the general public doesn't care about whether politicians debate about science is because science (unlike abortion, gun control and religion) isn't very well marketed to them. That was going to be my posed comment. The screener seemed to like it. Ah well. Next time.

I think it's a fools wish. Neither of them will. I really think this country could use a big common goal and space exploration could provide that. We need vision!

They seem to be passing the reins onto China and Russia. It's sad.

Russia is probably too poor, and China is probably a long way from having that kind of technology. My guess is that even if the President wanted to look for life on a nearby moon, it would be blocked by the fundamentalist caucus in Congress, they of the bury-your-head-in-the-sand life philosophy.
