Even if those planets are quite far away, if we are able to go really fast (as near as possible to C), and plan for a 1-way trip, we could reach nearby stars. Constant acceleration and time-dilation effects can make the trip less-than-a-lifetime long, for the voyagers anyway (but not for the observers left behind). At least that is my understanding; the main problem is that it takes a heap of energy for that constant acceleration.

Great link. The talking pig puts it in perspective nicely. Without some sort of vessel that could travel at C like speeds, we're not getting there. I think mk's Saturn Moon might be the way to go.

That's an interesting thought. What about sending the technology to take sperm/egg and fertilize once there for a small colony of humans? They could all have robotic parents that raise them. I see a movie script in your future...
