Huh, wouldn't have guessed that I grew up a town away from "Normal America". I guess part of it is that CT is extremely segregated from town-to-town, so the general impression I get of it is skewed by the relatively well-off town I come from. For example, Bridgeport and New Canaan are in the same county, with a difference of $180,000 a year median per-household income. Though I guess staggering income inequality is a pretty big part of "Normal America". Also strange to me that two of the towns on the list (Hartford and New Haven") are both in CT, which as a state is predominently small towns of white people. My uncle, for example, is a farmer in a town of about 1000 people, just an hour inland from me.
