It's tonight at 9 Eastern on all of the channels made of random letters of the alphabet. Could it be on Youtube? I keep hearing Youtube is streaming these things.
Things are really weird right now in the world of politics. Who knows what we should really expect tonight? Let's hope it stays civil at the very least.
Speaking of tiny hands, it's cold enough that I need to start dressing in layers to stay warm. My wife pointed out a sweater she got for me last year that I had yet to wear. With the exception of a sweater I used to wear at work to keep from freezing to death and a really nice one a college friend gave me because he shrunk it in the wash, I've never been a fan. This one though? It's changed my mind. Homemade sweaters must be nice, but there's something to be said about modern textile methods. This thing has yarn so small the only way it could be knitted is either A) machine or B) the tiny hands of an angel. I've been wearing it all day. I'm a convert. I now love sweaters.
Kind of creepy that I'm literally browsing men's sweater patterns to knit on ravelry right now. I found a cardigan and the model for it actually looks very similar to the guy I would be making it for. Today is an odd day. I love sweaters, it's cold enough at work that I get to wear them for longer and I'm getting significantly less scrapes on my arms.
Apparently not. The only reason I can think that an otherwise reasonable person like Pence (and I mean reasonable in the loosest possible sense--not referring at all to his policy positions) would tolerate Trump is that he sees it as the easiest possible path to the White House. Kasich's people said that Trump's son called them last spring to offer him the job, adding that Kasich could be in charge of "domestic and foreign policy," while Trump himself would handle "making American great again." We can only assume the same offer was made to Pence. Right now, NYT gives Trump 16% odds of winning. To Pence, he has a 16% of being president himself, possibly for 16 years, since even if Trump doesn't immediately abdicate, he'll still be steering the ship. On the other hand, when Trump inevitably loses, Pence looks like the Good Guy who tried to right the ship against insurmountable odds, taking one on the chin for the GOP, thereby all but ensuring his 2020 bid for the Presidency. People think he's crazy, but I think he sees it as a win-win for himself. And the thing that should be obvious about politicians is that if you want to understand their behavior, you need to look at from the perspective of their own self-interest. That trumps all the notions of evangelicalism that he espouses and will every time.
Trump and everyone who supports him are a fucking embarrassment. What twisted, warped reality do these people live in? Makes me sick.
I know you're frustrated, but please don't let retoric and frustration drag you down too much. Trump aside, the people who support him (or used to support him but changed their minds) are still our neighbors and friends. We depend on each other and at the end of the day, it's important to try and be there for each other.
Some of our neighbors and friends seem to be stuck in 1955. I love them unconditionally but they would not love me if I told them what I truly think of their backwards, hateful opinions. I know we'll always have ignorance in this country but until this election I had no idea how ugly we really are. That debate was a travesty and I need a drink.
This man won twitter tonight https://twitter.com/bayoumimoustafa/status/785293447141924865
"You'd be in jail." -Trump will get a lot of traction from that from his base.
Isn't it awful? His zingers will poll extremely well with the Jerry Springer crowd. He's actually doing better than I thought he would and it's scaring me.
Also his zinger re Abe Lincoln. That said, the divide between him and Pence will be interesting.
I didn't watch, so I just had to look up what you were referencing. Apparently Clinton said to a private audience that one needs to have a public and a private position to accomplish anything in politics. The hilarious irony of this is that she has to say it in private, and now that it's public it's a big deal and she had to invent a lame excuse about Lincoln to justify it. The shame of politics and business in America is how true her statement is, not that she acknowledged it. The minute any of us lets nuance into our public persona, we're labeled as liars, flip-floppers, as having no commitment or belief, and as trying to trick people by prevaricating or talk down to them with three dollar words. I think the world could use a healthy dose of wonkiness. My wife made me watch about three minutes of the "debate", and the only question I saw related to Supreme Court nominations. It saddened me to have to watch Clinton, a gifted lawyer and policy expert, kowtow to liberals by repeating some bullshit about "roe", "citizens united" and all the rest. I can't imagine any other answer either of them gave waded too much deeper into policy than that one did.
I think at this point just choosing any American at random would likely yield a better president. The reason to vote vote Gary Johnson is because it would be nice to see a viable 3rd party next time around not because he can win or because he would be any good
Here's a good place to start: https://medium.com/@ronaldwdixon/dont-be-fooled-why-bernie-sanders-supporters-should-stay-clear-of-gary-johnson-21321874ddc8#.gx6b8540v
As I expected. DT managed to keep it together for 20 minutes before interrupting and becoming childish. He just can not resist. And his supporters only managed to remember that they were at debate for about that long as well. sniffle sniffle
That article from the guy that helped him write Art of the Deal said that he had no attention span.
Yea somehow someway that was thirty minutes of some sort of discussion.
They used words. And talked in the same room as each other. That's a discussion, right?
Well so far, this has just been entertainment and nothing more.
I don't have enough alcohol in the house to watch, but I will be on IRC to do so vicariously through everyone else.
Think I'm going to go to the nearby cinema which is going to be showing this...I should go grab a ticket now and sit in absolute terror with ~70 other people.
I had thought tarring and feathering was usually fatal, and I've long said I'd never cheer anyone's death (except Scalia). Wikipedia seems to think I was wrong, in which case I'd love to see a little tarring and feathering.
See, it's shit like this that makes me think conspiracy theorists may have a point.
Nah, this isn't like the stuff the conspiritards come up with. As whoever wrote it says, They used whatever influence they could to keep Trump from getting shut down by cooler heads, but he got the nomination because he actually represents the clowns that make up base of the Republican party. They used the last half-century of Republican strategy against them, but they didn't force Trump on anyone. In this scenario, we don’t want to marginalize the more extreme candidates, but make them more “Pied Piper” candidates who actually represent the mainstream of the Republican Party.
Sure, but I think I perhaps overcorrect the other way when it comes to this kind of thing. I wonder what they actually did to effect this?
