I always thought that this was caused by static electricity. either way, I wonder if there's a way to rubber coat ear bud cables?

Nah. Any time two woven fabrics rub against one another they make noise. It's just one ridged surface being scraped along another ridged surface, and every time those ridges bump into each other... you get noise.

And I guess you could wrap them in scotch tape, or dip them in plastidip, or something, but... bleh.

I'm just going to sell them.
