I mean basically what I got from the article is " x movement is supposed to be about y but some people take it to far and make it about z so it makes others feel alienated."

Literally insert any movement for x and it'll work. There will always be those people that make any movement more about their own image and less about it's role in society. Once it's personal or they identify with it they have a harder time fitting others into the movement who aren't like them or who aren't on the same path.

I think that problem is inherit in the whole "the personal is political" thing, because what's personally liberating is what's transgressive, and the boundaries we need to transgress vary between people as much as between classes of people.
