I think the United States are far from becoming a theocracy. Church and State always have a hard time being completely separated. In my country, for ex., we got a crucifix on our Supreme Court. http://tinyurl.com/3fygfxy

Ahh, yes, that's just my flair for the dramatic. I know we're far from it, but still I can't help but feel frustrated with leaders who factor their expectations of a soon-to-arrive end of times into their decisions. And OHMYGOD WHY IS THERE A CRUCIFIX IN YOUR COURTROOM. But still Catholics don't really seem like they've been drinking as much kool-aid as good old american evangelists. I know that they take their spirituality seriously, but I don't think that they take the book of revelations quite so seriously. It has always seemed to me to be a somewhat more casual take on things, even if the official policies are stricter.
