- If the founders of a new face recognition app get their way, anonymity in public could soon be a thing of the past. FindFace, launched two months ago and currently taking Russia by storm, allows users to photograph people in a crowd and work out their identities, with 70% reliability... In future, the designers imagine a world where people walking past you on the street could find your social network profile by sneaking a photograph of you, and shops, advertisers and the police could pick your face out of crowds and track you down via social networks.
Normally I'm not a Luddite, but this shit has got to stop. How could you ever feel free to do anything in public if anybody could take a picture of you and link it to your identity? Good Lord!
I'm torn on this one. Living in a world where anyone and everyone has this sort of profiling power sounds entirely dystopian. On the other hand, governments and businesses have been using these tools for years with increasing efficacy. Unfortunately, average people having this power in the form of an app does little to nothing to offset the overreaches of those more powerful.
Doing what that person does with their hair/makeup makes facail reconigion apps VERY confused.
It's called dazzle makeup if you want to search for more examples and information. The concept is based on dazzle camouflage, which provided some equally interesting paint jobs for ships.
That's so cool! It must be one hell of a treat to see these in the wild. Being RHD, I wonder what final market it's intended for. Maybe Australia? Here's an article on the subject that you and DragonflyMind might enjoy reading.
Thank you for a whole new category of dazzle pictures to look at!
I'm more than a bit disturbed by this affair. Instead of actually coming up and saying "Hello". I know dating in Russia is screwed up, but to make it more so with this creepy practice? "Find people like your ex, because the first time wasn't enough". Jesus. Of course you would, assholes. Since: Meanwhile, I wasn't able to find the source code for the thing. "Open and transparent" in this case means "in our hands because we're cool like that". And as icing on the cake, the website both positions itself as an "innovative dating service" and has the audacity to state that's it been "recommended" by the aforelinked Guarding article right on its front page. For the first time I'm glad not to have a picture up on my VK page.Kabakov says the app could revolutionise dating: “If you see someone you like, you can photograph them, find their identity, and then send them a friend request.”
“It also looks for similar people. So you could just upload a photo of a movie star you like, or your ex, and then find 10 girls who look similar to her and send them messages.”
as well as by online vigilantes to uncover the social media profiles of female porn actors and harass them.
Kabakov and Kukharenko said they had not received an approach from Russia’s FSB security service, but “if the FSB were to get in touch, of course we’d listen to any offers they had”.
[Kabakov] believes we cannot stop technological progress so must work with it and make sure it stays open and transparent.
