Microsoft Surface is not fundamentally about Microsoft needing to control the entire integrated product in order to compete with the iPad on design. It’s about Microsoft needing to sell the whole thing to sustain its current profitability.

- what are they going to do? Turn to Linux (which no one wants) or Android (which no one wants on anything other than phones)?

If their impetus to unleash it in such a hasty manner was to be out ahead of Googles launch, then I think it was a poor decision.
Remember being a kid in class and having to give a speech? You either go first or last. First gets all the forgiveness, but in this case apple essentially owns the "first" category as people automatically will hold any of these products against theirs. Whoever goes last has the advantage of knowing the shortcomings of all of their competitors and addressing them. Plus they get the advantage of lingering in the consumers conscience. Nobody remembers the hastily prepared speech that was all over the map. At least not in a good way.
