My free account at MarineTraffic gives me a notification whenever Aegean Dignity arrives or departs a port, or a user submits a photo.
This makes for an interesting and narrow way to learn "what's going on in the world," a goal I used to try and satisfy by reading news.
A broader view is provided by ShipMap, which omits details of individual ships (beyond cargo type) to show global perspective of ship movements over the course of a year.
Very nice visualization - and hey, finally a rightful use for Mercator! Although I would also love to see a gnomic projection. But that's just the map nerd in me. Also neat how well you can see the less known routes, like Seattle-China and Austrailia-China cutting through Indonesia.
