"I am so ashamed to be an American", is not a comment that I see frequently, if at all. Perhaps you are in need of a forum cleanse?! As for the "puritan" foundation of our nation, sure it lays the groundwork for many of our most noble virtues but it is not the sole bedrock on which we are found. Not too long after our founding, the notion of "manifest destiny" crept in and has yet to leave. The idea that we have a sort of "eminent domain" over all things "un-American" is where this concept has taken us and currently holds root. It is in the vein of "manifest destiny" that organizations such as the ones noted in the post find refuge and sympathy. It is a mistake to paint the U.S as a nation to be ashamed of but imo, it is a greater mistake to confuse the reporting of an organizations financing with "dumping on America".
Purtians?! I was referring to the Founders and the philosophical and ethical basis of their platform. You know, Jefferson, et al.
> Perhaps you are in need of a forum cleanse?! Perhaps. This is the part of the sociopolitical issue we are facing these days, isn't it? anyway, google "i am ashamed to be an american". I just did and got "About 537 results (0.12 seconds) " if you select the last 24 hours ... > Not too long after our founding, the notion of "manifest destiny" crept in and has yet to leave [...] Agreed.

"puritans", I menat to write "prodistant" -I was at a baseball game commenting from my cell phone after several PBR tall boys, cut me some slack on that one please.
As for the the forums where people openly bash the US and claim shame for being from here, wasn't it you that stopped reading fiction to avoid the pitfalls of polluting your intake of information? Glad we found some common ground re: Manifest Destiny. Alright, this was a solid rant in both directions.
