I've spent several hours over the last few days trying to get a feel for the place. Spent a couple hours trying to register (there was a glitch).
I've read some drama, some encouraging stuff, some academic stuff and some artsy stuff. I'm still getting a feel for what shows in my feed and how things work technically.
I'm liking what I see so far.
I'd really like to be part of the community, but I'm a bit of a noncomformist. Any noncomformists out there that feel like they fit in well here?
Another question: If I start a thread on a topic that I'm interested in but no one else joins in, can I bump it?
Welcome! A jade dog sounds cute. Jade reminds me of a fun literary myth about Goethe's Über allen Gipfeln Above all summits it is calm. In all the tree-tops you feel scarcely a breath; The birds in the forest are silent, just wait, soon you will rest as well. Crows fly mutely to snow-dusted cherry trees in moonlight I sit and cry For some reason I always have to think of that when I think about jade. (also apologies to the german language for that butcher job) That's not really how hubski works - stuff you post is either seen by people that follow you, or by people who follow your post's tags. Time isn't as much a factor as, say, reddit. So people who care will see it, no need to bump. People also do revive old discussions again when something interesting can be said. I do hope that when you said you read some drama you were referring to galen's upcoming theatre performance ;P
Allegedly the poem was translated into Japanese, then French, then German again and had become something like this
Silence reigns in the pavilion of jade
If I start a thread on a topic that I'm interested in but no one else joins in, can I bump it?
Yes. YES. This. A thousand times this. We are not Reddit. Reddit is great. This is not it. Posts come and posts go. Sometimes I have posted stuff that has been life changing for me and it doesn't get a single share. And do you know what? Who cares. Also - just yesterday I was reading through posts that were 1000+ days old. Great content is timeless. That's not really how hubski works - stuff you post is either seen by people that follow you, or by people who follow your post's tags. Time isn't as much a factor as, say, reddit. So people who care will see it, no need to bump. People also do revive old discussions again when something interesting can be said.
I love that picture! Thanks! Thank you for that poem also. It's very beautiful. I don't think I explained myself well in regards to bumping threads. I meant adding comments to them without replying to anyone, sort of blog style. I'm following a couple TV shows that I really like but maybe no one else will. Could I add commentary to the season's thread after a show even if no one else is participating? There might be people who are interested in reading it even if they don't want to comment.
Welcome to Hubski! Re: nonconformism, my general impression is that this place is basically a collection of weirdos, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I think we're all a bit nonconformist in our own ways on here. We all just get along for the most part because we're also very open to worthwhile discussions and enjoy each other’s insight.Any noncomformists out there that feel like they fit in well here?
Just the other day I was sort of told I was a conformist but I always just felt like an adult. Sometimes I like the system dammit, it keeps things organized ! I guess I don't know what I am and here I was thinking I was getting close to figuring that out. I'm sure we all have something we conform too really. I've noticed with posts sometimes they take a while to actually get started so I would take that in to account when you start a new one because it might just take longer than you're used too.
Thanks for the heads up that it might take longer for posts to get started. I originally come from a couple really small message boards, so I'm very used to that. I really like the slower pace, which is one of the reasons I decided to lurk and finally post here.
Welcome! Check out the random button at the bottom of the page. -Always fun. Enjoy! Edit: Check out the primer page:there was a glitch
-Can you elaborate? I'd like to have it fixed if possible. Any noncomformists out there that feel like they fit in well here?
I'm not sure if I qualify as a "nonconformist," but I do love that Hubski is a place to find and explore new ideas and new ways of thinking. I've had my ideas challenged many times here and I'm the better for it. If I start a thread on a topic that I'm interested in but no one else joins in, can I bump it?
I'm not sure what "bump it" means? But you can always comment on a thread, even an old one and it can bring it "back to life" so to speak.
Thanks for the welcome! Glitch was fixed by someone I PMed on reddit. Maybe mk? I don't know all the names here. I really wasn't clear about what I meant by "bump it". I probably should have given an example. What I had in mind was if I started a post on a topic like a TV show or a series and then later, I had a review on another piece of it or the next week in a TV show or just more to add to the topic but no one else seemed interested. I was wondering whether it was considered poor etiquette to continue posting in the comments, adding new information even if no one else joined in. Thanks for the tip of the random button. That sounds like fun. I check out random subs at reddit all the time.
On the contrary, it's encouraged. Making a comment in an old post will bump it up on the global feed, so people will see it again, and maybe add to your comment. I was wondering whether it was considered poor etiquette to continue posting in the comments, adding new information even if no one else joined in.
Now that I've been here a couple more days, I have another question. I've tried to read the Primer as best I could and tried to follow as many links in it as I could. I also tried just pressing buttons, but I don't want to mess too much up. Is there a way to have someone's comments (including their comments on other people's posts) and their posts disappear from your view without letting them know? Thanks, and thanks for all the warm welcomes.
Thanks for the response. I'm doing badly at asking these questions. I tried the hush and filter buttons before. The hush button puts comments that person started on the bottom of the comments. Since a lot of people respond to other people comments, I would still see their comments. For me, the filter button just puts a line through the person's name, but I see their comments if I open a post. Supposedly their comments don't show up in my feed or chatter, but that's not how I find comments. From what I can tell, their comments still show up in the post the same way, just with their name lined-through. I didn't want to try the mute because I was afraid the person might be notified.
Hmmm... Based on the descriptions, I thought one of them might have done what you're looking for... mk forwardslash or thenewgreen did I read the descriptions wrong? Mute or block won't notify someone per se... But if you use them, the other person gets a "you are muted here" instead of a reply button - so yah, they quickly find out. Edit: I just re-read and see that filter takes your content out for my feed and chatter... But not from the post itself... Hmmm. I wonder if the kind of moderation you're looking for is possible?
Hi, welcome, I usually just lurk here as opposed to most users who actively participate but sometimes I comment if I find something interesting. Where have you read some drama? Do you mean meta-drama like on reddit? FuzzyWords goes back to the shadows
Hey, just an FYI that the overwhelming majority of Hubskiers are lurkers.
Question to non-lurkers: How long do you take to write a comment/post? I've given up writing so many posts, because it's like 40 minutes of dedication just to write a short post sometimes. I find that there are phases where I just think and write with no perfection, and I post a lot more. Maybe these phases are when I'm feeling social, rather than constructive? I tend to be a perfectionist with 'constructive' things.
It depends on the post type, but a good response easily takes half an hour to an hour of iterating. That's mostly because I want it to be honest, be logical, have correct grammar and also sound right. That said, an imperfect comment is almost always better than no post. I only delete drafts when I can't communicate my thoughts properly or when I don't have my facts straight.
That certainly depends on the post or comment. Most of the time if I comment it doesn't take long at all. I am likely espousing one of my own beliefs that I thought about in the past. Or I'm speaking from experience and don't really have to do any research. However, there are times when I have to do research and it takes Longer. I use talk to text for most of my comments these days via my iPhone. It saves me time. It's amazing how little I'm using my lap top these days.
Yes. If you go to a site where there's absolutely no drama, it's very likely that there's a lot of censorship since that's the only way to eliminate all drama. I wouldn't like a place like that because I wouldn't want to conform to the level of censorship. It would mean that expressing yourself in conflict is forbidden. If the site has only drama, it's likely the site is flaming out. That's not happening here, from what I can tell. For my preference, a small amount of drama is healthy for a site. That's what I see here.
