It shouldn't be called paranoia when there really is pervasive surveillance of every member of society. I try to educate everyone I can on the importance of taking concrete steps to protect their privacy both online, and offline. For further reading, I highly recommend the following sites:

But the appropriate response isn't fear. For most of us, state surveillance is a violation but not an immediate threat. It's something to agitate against, and to subvert to the extent possible, but not to go cower in a corner over.

You can certainly protect yourself from passive surveillance that way, but if the government wants your data, they can and will take it.
