Now if only they could prevent LED light bulbs from exploding. Or maybe it's just that I bought a bunch of cheap Chinese LED bulbs of questionable quality.
These were all replacements for 50W halogens, ordered from dx.com (Deal Extreme) I haven't had any 'normal' LED bulbs explode (yet!). 4 of them (maybe 5?) exploded over the course of about 2 years. A loud "pop", a bad stink, and tiny bits of glass strewn across the kitchen - not ideal. No fires, though.
I suspect they might have given me 120V bulbs instead of the 240V ones I ordered. The failed component was always a barrel cap, never any of the LEDs themselves. I doubt my wife will be keen on another experiment, though. IF that's the case, kinda impressive that they lasted as long as they did.
