President Barack Obama honored Vietnam War veterans on Monday, saying the United States had learned "hard lessons" from the conflict and promising not to send U.S. troops back into harm's way without a clear mission and strategy.

I think this was simply a not-so-subtle bash of the prior administration, for getting involved in two wars with no clear exit plans (and fair enough). No real content to his words, though.

It's the equivalent of saying "if I really need to, I'll kill people, but only if I really, really need to".

Unfortunately for the US, 'absolutely nessesary' includes reasons like shaving a few cents off the price of a barrel of oil, nation building in resource rich regions, and deposing regimes that are politically opposed to our hegemony. We even have God on our side according to our leaders.
Sigh.
