    A cohesive culture with a single, aligned set of ideals will have less violence, less terrorism, less hated, than one that does not.

I would like to highlight that this does not mean a monoculture. That also doesn't mean allowing fusing openly hostile groups in effort to cause a ceasefire.

There has been some more serious discussion about the possibility of some kind of secular Arabic state being formed out of this whole mess. But many of the religious conflicts also have deep roots in ethnic hatred\rivalry which further complicates any potential coalition of non-extremist forces.

Agreed. Monoculture can be just as bad as no culture at all. What is needed is a good "education" system that ensures that diverse views can be held, but also ensures that all people are aligned in the common goal of some greater structure. Religion->democracy/capitalism->humanitarianism seems to be the current pattern of goals, or how the west has progressed/is progressing through them.
