Interesting. A similar concept appeared in Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged". As a libertarian, Thiel must be familiar with this story.

I'm sure he is. Life imitating art. IMHO, a libertarian island like this would fail spectacularly, but I think there are probably multiple motivations at play. One might be Thiels' desire/curiosity to realize and/or test his pet philosophy, but I believe the other is to address the problems I described.

I think that such a "state" would be tolerated by the powers that be only until it became problematic. Once they became a "thorn", they wouldn't last long. True power is having an idea that people are willing to stand behind or even die for without the promise of glory or monetary reward. I think these "super wealthy" will find themselves standing alone and only then will realize that their "importancĀe" was always justified in measure.
