Really? If you live in the city I am actually jealous of your options! One stop at Eastern Market on the weekends provides, for very very little money, tons of great produce to last the week. They have a butcher right there, and that great cheese and bread shop. Every time I go I feel like I spend a fraction of what I do at a full service grocers, and get healthier and better goods. Sure you're not going to find Captain Crunch there but... :)

You're not going to find Captain Crunch at Whole Foods either. I'm not that familiar with Eastern Market but I used to work for a company that sourced a lot of produce/meat from there. Turns out most of the grocers in SE Michigan also source their veggies and meat from the Eastern market via distributors that buy from there and deliver it to grocers/restaurants. Whole Foods offers products that you likely will not be able to find at Eastern Market and if you did, it would be more expensive. So, can you get a great ribeye at the butcher at Eastern Market? Sure, but it's not going to be USDA Organic, Grass Fed, Pasture Raised. So there's really not an apples to apples comparison. If there is, and it's the same quality/qualifications it's actually likely that Whole Foods will be a better price given their buying power of such items. Speaking of "apples", eat a conventional one, then eat an organic apple. Crazy difference.
