Recently I learned that opera can be totally fun. I saw La Traviata with my SO at a dress rehearsal (free for students!) the other day on a whim and I absolutely loved it. It was hilarious, dramatic, captivating...nothing like the stuffy image I had of it before. I'm very glad I took the opportunity. Here's one of my favorite songs from it, a drinking song called "Libiamo ne' lieti calici": Hey kleinbl00, have you seen this one?
I always say "If you Like Star Wars, you like opera." Star wars, and space movies like it (such as Interstellar), are just Opera in english, with music and Leitmotifs taking the role that singing would have.
Kate Davis is SO good. though to be a filthy snob, her vibrato needs work, as does her bowing. But she makes more money playing the bass than I do, so don't listen to me.
I stumbled upon this band called 'Agam', who are creating an interesting form of fusion music combining elements of old indian ragas with rock music.
Rock and roll qawwali! I like aspects of this, but for some reason I can't shake the fact that is sounds kind-of cheesy. I can't put my finger on why. I think it may be the guitars. If they were playing the exact same music but without the distortion, I think I'd dig it more. -Cool stuff though, I'm glad I checked it out. You ever listen to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan?
I do listen to a lot of Pakistani music including Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. My favorite is Abida Parveen though. Unfortunately, most of Nusrat's best works are recorded in somewhat poor recording conditions and that spoils the experience a bit. I found this great Pakistani band today:
Oscar Key Sung - Holograms Vallis Alps - Thru Mtns - Lost Track of Time Blackbear - Valley Girls Village - Takeover Draper, Alby Hobbs - With You Just a handful of what I'm on lately
Every once in a while I find myself asking, "Dude, what the fuck are you listening to? Are you sure this is music?" It's how I know I should take a step back and refresh, so:
"Dude, what the fuck are you listening to? Are you sure this is music?"
