Meriadoc and I apparently missed that Frank Turner dropped a new album and it is a w e s o m e
Bought tix for Bright Light Social Hour, Robert Delong, Front Bottoms, Mitski and Rise Against in November. Good month. Also I think Elvis Depressedly? America: you can currently see Mitski perform for 12 dollars. Mitski is as yet ignorant that I am in love with her so we'll see how that goes.
How do you feel about the new Front Bottoms songs? Mitski is a national treasure for her instagram account alone. Elvis Depessedly is great too, big fan of them. You reminded me that I still need to go buy my Modern Baseball ticket.
Kneejerk verdict is that I prefer the first two albums. But they haven't taken a significant step backward, like Twentyone Pilots did. Is it just me or is his voice softer and smoother now? I wonder if that's a production thing now that they've got actual name recognition. I don't like it.
I'm a huge Front Bottoms fan, I hope you enjoy the show! Their concerts are such a joy. I prefer the first two albums as well, but I think that there are some real gems on the new album. "Cough it Out," "Historic Cemetery," and "The Plan" make me smile and sing along as much as any of their songs. It's fun to hear their sound evolving, but I think the biggest reason I haven't fallen in love with this new album is that Brian's lyricism seems to lack the straightforward hilarity, honesty, and insight that I feel like it used to have.
Damn, I'm in love with her too. I have a problem. EDIT: I am also in love with Courtney Barnett. EDIT2: Guess who Courtney Barnett is currently playing some shows with? . . . I bet you didn't guess Blur.
I've been listening to the self-titled album by "American Football", which was released back in 1999 but is new to me.
This album is truly exceptional. The singer/guitarist, Mike Kinsella, was the drummer for the band Cap'n Jazz starting when he was about 8. He and the other members have been in so many different projects and bands since then. If you haven't heard his solo music, I would absolutely recommend it. He goes under the name Owen. Back to AF, it's not often that you hear an album so far ahead of its time. It just started to blow up a couple years back, 13 or so years after it was released, and it sounds brand new. It has been such a huge influence on emo, mathrock, and most "indie" bands since then. They really took the twinkle style guitars from Cap'n Jazz and put them in an easily accessible setting, making odd time signatures sound fluid and normal. I can't say enough about how great these guys are.
Thanks for letting me know about the members and their other projects -- I'll definitely have to check them out as I've been really digging the American Football album. And I completely agree that this album is so far ahead of its time -- it sounds so fresh, it could have been released last week and I'd never had known any different.
I have been listening to Noah and the Whale's first album, "Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down." It's an uplifting album, which is a departure from what I usually listen to, and a change that I think my soul really needs this month.
