i saw one of those on the highway once, tree and all. makes you realize just how much we've dominated our earth.

We are fleas upon the earth. The people of Thailand didn't do much better than the folks
in Pompeii.
For that matter, GDP clearly doesn't even protect you in a adjacent timeframe - look at Japan and Thailand. Accounting for population density probably not much difference in mortality. -XC

I can lift a boulder above my head and if I drop it then it will crush me, but the fact that I can still lift it at all is remarkable nonetheless.

This video reminded me of something out of Tolkien. I think Treebeard would have growled in anger and smashed that thing to bits with a large boulder.

No way dude. Treebeard would have a treeboner for that thing because it saves trees and gives them new homes. Look how happy everyone is for that thing. It's even a good photo-op for the city parks board :)

Could have done without the Treebeard boner image, but point taken.

This is cool. I was listening to story the other day about Johnny Appleseed and why he became se beloved. It's because planting an apple tree became a way to stake claim to property rights. If you had a tree that was 3 years or older on a property then it was your property. Johnny would go around selling 3 year old trees, thereby essentially selling domain rights. He was the historical version of this machine.
