The article focuses on Facebook, but I think the popularity of image macros on Facebook is a relatively new development. This girl's photo has been around for a while and used in ableist memes in communities like 4chan and reddit.

I've seen it numerous times randomly on reddit and I have unsubscribed to all the default subreddits. They're everywhere. I don't know how you would stop it.
I never considered that there is a person behind the macro, or that they might see it.

Never considered that. Not cool. But if you post a photo in an open forum it's now public property essentially, right? No trademark.

It was my understanding that you reserve all copyright unless you explicitly say otherwise, and this photo was taken from a parent's support group website.

You're probably right. I have a few many pics of myself online but this makes me want to get rid of any of my wife/daughter.

This is horrible stuff. I don't understand this type of thing?! But there is no denying that millions of people flock to it.

People just don't think about stuff like this. There are heaps of the same style images that are hilarious. And heaps that are totally stupid. The "retard girl" is one of the most tasteless, but a lot are tasteless. And stupid.

I visited your links. Not gonna lie, I laughed. Some of it's clever and creative but the vast majority is repetitive, stupid and predictable.

Yup. You are now a master of memes and understand why people hate default subs on reddit. They are all these things. Even the comments are these things in text form.
