When I check Wikipedia, it seems like the bulk of it came from one guy. Wouldn't it be better to ask "What's his strategy?"

Andreessen Horowitz is the name of a venture capital firm, not a single person. Their strategy is definitely to latch onto a popular site, and squeeze out the profit by cranking up the advertisements.

1) I feel dumb for not clicking on the name to find out it's not a dude, but a company.

2) At this point, isn't it safe to say "advertising" is everybody's answer to making money on the internet?

It's certainly the prevailing business model. I haven't seen too many others that scale to a large size.

Oddly enough, prior to AH stomping in they were trying to sell "Imgur Pro." I think that was about six weeks before Flickr ditched Flickr Pro.
