Hubski has a pretty simple design but it's functional. I wonder what this site will look like 6 months from now? Although more functions have been introduced since I've used the site, it looks pretty much the same. Minimalist imo.

I wonder too. I think mk has done a pretty great job so far. I like the simple view. I have made fun of his color choices in the past... [poke poke poke] but I think for a one man show - the place is highly functional, nice and clean and has a decent design aesthetic.

I very much like the interface here, simple and effective without moving elements or distractions. What are your thoughts (or anyone else who wants to chime in) on ad space? Are there any tasteful ways to incorporate ads into a website? In the end, if a site is going to grow, it needs $ from somewhere. How do you do that without destroying the beauty of the site?

Google and Reddit had done it well with sponsored links on top.

Yeah, I think so too. I never even notice them anymore. Good for me, bad for the people paying to advertise.

I agree, it doesn't interfere too much. I'd be okay with that.

There's the billion dollar question. There are a lot of really creative and bright people trying to figure it out. I think it can be done but it has to adhere to some rules: Be relevant, be quiet and be avoidable.

Be relevant: A site like Hubski shouldn't be advertising for Maxim. Probably not a good fit. But what is? That's the question that needs answering. This way the users feel the ad's are a value add and not a distraction.

Be quiet: No flash, no bling, be understated. Ad's by their very nature want to be noticed but yelling "HEY LOOK AT ME" on Hubski just isn't appropriate. The way the ad's are presented must be in cohesion with the way the site is presented.

Be Avoidable: If I'm an avid Hubskier and I want an ad free Hubski, I think I should be able to pay for a subscription that provides this to me at a reasonable cost. Say $12 a year.

Just some ideas off the top of my head. Not like I've ever considered this before ;)

And - hey - my apologies to you and the others that work on this behind the scenes with mk. I called it a one man show, but I know you and others have helped out considerably.

As far as the nuts and bolts of the site, it is a one man show. A few of us do this and that, but he built the site himself and deserves all the credit in the world for that. That said, there's a lot to be crowd sourced as far as functionality, so the more suggestions the better.

Yep, without mk there is no Hubski.
