They're like tricks or illusions of thought, and they're often very sneakily used by politicians and the media to fool people.

Can you imagine watching a debate where the appropriate fallacy icon just flashed each time a politician uttered it? If you made a drinking game out of it you would end up hospitalized every time...

Yeah, DO NOT make a drinking game out of it. Alcohol poisoning can be very serious.

Now that would be an awesome app.

IMHO half of the reason that so many conservatives in the US doubt global warming is because Al Gore was the first person to introduce the concept to them. -I've always disliked how Gore brings up the 2000 election in An Inconvenient Truth. There was no need for it at all.

I think that specific objection also says something about how much more personal and emotional American conservatism is. They firmly believe that attacking the messengers of an inconvenient message (Al Gore, Darwin, Dawkins, etc.) it somehow disproves the argument. That kind of ad hominem might work against other conservatives who follow one cult of personality or another, but not against most liberals. The liberal position on climate change, evolution, etc. does not rest on the person delivering it, but the facts behind them.
