I been listening to Harry Nilssons album "Knnillssonn" a ton this year, it's on my top 10 records list at the moment. Moments of incredible beauty and inane silliness. Most people are think Nilsson Shmilson is his best, but I prefer Knnillssonn. Got back into him when my mom sent me some of my old kid records for my daughter, Harry's "The Point" album was in there, got to say that it's a great kids album.
Nilsson and Lennon famously got kicked out of a Smothers Brothers show for heckling when they were on a bender together. There are many stories of Nilssons outrageous debauchery, which all seem to contrast strangely with his varied musical experiments. Nice example of Nilssons strange beautiful taste http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf3gyNbn5JI

There's a nice documentary you should check out if you haven't called Who is Harry Nilsson. It has all the stories in it - Lennon's Lost Weekend and all that. Sad to see how self destructive he was, but I guess that maybe, for a man with natural talent, it was kind of a form of creation.
The first time I heard Nilsson was on NPR. They were playing The Point! straight through. I sat in my driveway for 30 minutes listening. Blew me away. Ever since then I've been an admirer. Oddly enough, I don't really listen to a lot of his work. For me, I love the musician more than the music. But that's why I love the music.
