- But it was at the White Sands National Monument of New Mexico, a region where beautiful landscapes can conceal dangers quick to surprise even the most prepared visitor, that the Steiners’ new trip took a terrible turn. Last week, the couple was found dead in the desert, apparently from heat-related exhaustion during a hike. Their 9-year-old son, Enzo, was the only one to survive, found alive by park rangers who believe his parents sacrificed water to save him.
Incredibly tragic. Be careful out there, and listen to your body.

This is like pure tragedy. I can't even imagine. Bring water people. Bring lots and lots of water. I also advise hiking desert spots in spring or fall... not fucking August.

Totally agree on all counts. Also, don't split up. If one person lags or turns back, everyone stays together. I turned back on a hike in March. It was really tough, but I made it out safely and maintain it was the right decision. Safety can't be over stressed. I feel bad for the child. I can't imagine how horrible of an experience it must be.
