I have some reservations posting this, given recent discussions, but it is definitely important news. Someone, or someones, messed up a lot, and it's likely to have some large ramifications.
Why do you think this will have large ramifications? The guy had a stolen gun, there's going to be dash cam footage of him shooting at the cops, he was being pursued in regards to a recent shooting in the area which he was seen running from. It seems like a pretty open and shut case. More importantly, he lived. I'm from St. Louis and once the DoJ report came out that essentially said that Furguson police department and municipal court system needed reform, but that Michael Brown's death was completely justified and supported by Darren Wilson's testimony, the fire went out. The protests are tiny now and people are working their reforms through the legislative and executive systems instead.
I agree it's a pretty open and shut case, but it definitely isn't the publicity that needs to be coming from the one-year anniversary. I'm actually surprised how little media attention there is on the memorial. I'm in Madison, and we had the Tony Robinson shooting in the spring, and I don't think there was anything here last night.
I'm more upset that the community used up all their energy on Michael Brown so that the public was fatigued on the topic. By the time Eric Garner and Freddy Gray happened they weren't able to capitalize. Same thing happened with Occupy Wallstreet. Lot of pissed off people from a decade of war, corporate welfare and government cronyism and they turn it into a pissing match of who can be the most peaceful.
Absolutely. Eric Holder spoke very well on the topic during the press conference for the release of the DoJ report. He defended the actions of Darren Wilson as justified though tragic, but moved to ask why were so many people willing to immediately trust that the Ferguson PD was a bunch of rabid dogs out to shoot their citizens. “Seen in this context, amid a highly toxic environment, defined by mistrust and resentment, stoked by years of bad feelings and spurred by illegal and misguided practices, it is not difficult to imagine how a single tragic incident set off the city of Ferguson like a powder keg,” Holder said. There are serious issues at play here, and they need to be fixed. I was hugely disappointed when the political field around here didn't change in any meaningful way. The mayor is still in place, and having spoken with some people who work with the prosecutor's office in the city, he wanted to keep the police chief in place until a week before the new guy was put in. The new guy is talking about community policing etc. which is the same thing they do every time, but without trust to back it up, I'm not optimistic. It really doesn't have anything to do with the cops driving by, or checking in on your store. It's more to do with whether or not they shoot you to death instead of de-escalating the situation. For his part, I believe I just heard something about Governor Nixon wanting funding from the state to go to de-escalation training.
