I don't believe that it was Ubuntu. Mageia had the same problem. As I wrote, I still have no clue what was wrong or how a different USB port solved the problem.

If you switched from a USB3 to USB2 that would explain the difference. You could have also switched from a USB port that was backed by a chip on the motherboard to one that is directly handled by the CPU chipset.
