I've been seeing more and more pictures of up north, and it's getting me excited. I'm going to the UP in a couple weeks, it'll be the first time I've gone camping this year. I've apparently been there before as a baby, but I don't remember it so it doesn't count. I miss the Sleeping Bear Dunes, though. The last time I got to go there I was only something like 12 years old. Maybe we'll be able to stop there on our way back down, I've been led to believe we're stopping off at Short's anyways, so it's not too much further west.
Fun fact! I Sweden it is super common to go "Up North" to. It is crazy pretty up there around Lappland and Norrbotten.
Man. "Up North" for me is like... West. I live near the Rocky Mountains in Canada. I AM up north - we prefer to go "down south" for the occasional winter break. Also, unrelated, but how does anyone in the US survive their summers?! It gets to just over 30 Celsius without much humidity here and everyone turns into puddles on the floor.
I can understand you need to go south in the winter as there are many of us who like to escape the cold and snow here in Michigan too. Your Rockies sure are beautiful - we've been to both Banff and Jasper. We've been lucky so far here in Michigan as the temps have remained reasonable during the summer months - today may have been the first 90 F day of the year. Fortunately, cooling off starting tomorrow and in the 70s this week.
I grew up in Michigan and spent my summers on Lake Charlevoix. My grandparents have a home and a cabin on the South Arm of the lake, near East Jordan. It's an awesome place with many memories. I agree that it's restorative, beautiful and full of places to explore. I enjoyed your write up. To those living in the areas you are mentioning going "Up North" means the Upper Peninsula though. mk just returned from his annual two week trip up there.
Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it. My family used to travel to the Frankfort-Arcadia area on Lake Michigan every summer when I was young, then we started going on fishing trips to the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Eventually, my parents bought a place on a lake in Indiana's version of Up North - the lakes region in the northeastern part of the state.
