- He knew well that this election would be a circus. And he knew that if he stayed on as host he would be responsible for bringing a tight satirical edge to the insanity of the day. Most of all, he knew he would have to watch Fox News. And that idea was simply intolerable: “Watching these channels all day is incredibly depressing,” says Stewart. “I live in a constant state of depression. I think of us as turd miners. I put on my helmet, I go and mine turds, hopefully I don’t get turd lung disease.”
Is there any chance he would watch Fox News after stepping down as host? Stewart’s answer is an unequivocal “no way”: “Umm … All right, let’s say that it’s a nuclear winter, and I have been wandering, and there appears to be a flickering light through what appears to be a radioactive cloud and I think that light might be a food source that could help my family. I might glance at it for a moment until I realise, that’s Fox News, and then I shut it off.”
Could Stewart really be giving up his show due to Fox News fatigue? And if that is true, what does this say about political discourse in our nation? Does this mean Fox News won and Stewart gave up? I’d like to stay optimistic, but it’s time to take seriously the idea that Fox News killed the greatest satire show of our nation’s history.
Think about it; since Stewart started hosting his show Fox News has thrived—and it has thrived despite a constant, biting satirical show hosted by Stewart that consistently called out Fox News failures. During the run of Stewart as host of “The Daily Show,” Fox News has spun lies even more than ever. It also has more devout followers that are increasingly distanced from any fact-based reality known to humanity. Polls indicate that Fox News viewers are consistently swinging toward extremism that is hate-based and fact-averse.
16 years is plenty of time in most lines of work. I think most anyone would be tired of doing the same thing after so many years, especially such a public job where you have to be on your A game every single day. Top that with the type of content he has to sift through in order to help make his show, I'm surprised he made it that long. Still sucks not to have his show on, though.
Sixteen years of missing family dinners. They tape around five and Stewart said in interviews he wants to eat dinner with his kids on a regular basis. But this Salon writer knows wanting to be a devoted father is a cunning ruse. So he can more effectively expand on a point for 3,000 words or whatever
That's got to be rough on him - He's got a 9 and 11 year old at home. To be a father cases about his kids and that's never home for dinner, or just the evening in general, must be hard. Think of all of the events that he probably missed in those years due to work: Dance recitals, school awards, "graduations", etc. He probably spends a lot of time wondering if his kids think that he's neglecting them, because he's never home. To do it for a little while isn't that bad, but doing to the point of looking at his kids every now and then and going "Wow, did he/she change a lot. When did that happen? Where was I?" (well, more than a normal parent), must get to him. At the same time, Stewart's been at it for years. Imagine doing the same exact thing 5 days a week for 16 years. I'm not talking about having the same job - this man has to do literally the exact same thing every show. There's no chance to change titles. There's no moving around within the company or handling responsibilities, it's the same exact thing every single day. That doesn't mean he hates his job, but does having your favorite food every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 16 years ever get tiring? He said himself that he's covered 4 elections already, and this one doesn't look any different. Take that a step further and his daily content really doesn't change either: FOX is stupid, CNN is overreacting, FOX just said something outrageous. Doing a job like Stewart has every day has to wear a person down. Sixteen years of missing family dinners.
I appreciate the quotes around "graduations" as someone who doesn't think every fucking milestone in a child's life needs to be celebrated. Even high school graduation isn't as big a deal as it's made out to be. "Congratulations on completing your legally mandated education. Now get ready for life to kick your ass between your ears." Actually, a party before that last thing happens makes a lot of sense.
Facebook wore down everyone's sense of privacy with the same tactic. Just make it a non-stop, constant, pain in the ass ... and eventually no one will want to bother to keep up with privacy a primary concern. The important part is keeping up the message 100% of the time. FOX does it. They go picking up some schlub up out of Po-dunk nowhere newsroom and pay them so much that taxes really begin to seem like punishment for success. Keep that up ... keep them on the air and keep them paid like royalty ... constantly surrounded by coy sycophants who are paid paid paid ... and never let anyone else on the air. It is evil. And it is why there is no FOX Canada.
I don't know if you mean there is no broadcast of FOX News in Canada, or if there is no Canada tailored FOX. Either way, it got me on a path of wondering where in the world FOX News is available and I found these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fox_News_World_Providers_Map.svg http://www.foxnews.com/story/2011/03/01/where-in-world-is-fox.html So FOX News is broadcast in Canada, and from the looks there are quite a lot of cable providers that do. That being said, if you mean a Canada centric FOX News, I think FOX in general pretty much only cares about the US and doesn't even really cater to other countries' politics. If it's true there is no FOX catered news for other countries, it's probably just because they don't give a damn about other countries. They tend to like reporting on the US Congress, the US executive branch, etc.And it is why there is no FOX Canada.
It is owned by Rupert Murdoch. I think, though, that FOX News might more have to do with Rupert Murdoch giving them an idea or overarching concept, and FOX running with it. I highly doubt he has much to do with the individual programming even if it follows his worldview. But that is a good point that he might have his hands in other misleading news organizations around the world, he could have given the same goals to other news companies. I don't have the time to research such a large task but it would be interesting to find out.
