A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed."
— Archbishop Desmond Tutu
I love this phrase. It speaks to the interconnected nature of humanity on all levels.
"I am because of the group of friends I am part of."
"I am because my family is."
"I am because of my community."
"I am because I choose to contribute to the world and belong to a community of contributors."
"I am because humanity exists."
"I am because of all life." cool.
I think that it's rather clever as well, since it taps into the same sense of 'us' from fascist or nationalist 'us vs them' sentiments, and then in the next breath explicitly rejects the notion of 'them'.
