I'm currently working my way through Tolkien's version of Beowulf. It's my bathroom reading, and it's relatively interesting - After the story, there's commentary, and then a sort-of-retelling written by Tolkien called Sellic Spell

Oh yay, someone else reading this! I peeked through the different sections and the commentary/lectures seem like such a great addition. What drew you to the book?

I wanted to know what the first word was! I'd read Heaney's translation for school, and I knew the controversy of the translation.

Ha, I think that's the first thing I checked... In one sense it's great that there can be so much uncertainty in the word when presumably the interpretation must have been obvious at the time it was written.
