I heard an interesting story about "Let It Be" on a radio tribute to Aretha this morning. Apparently Paul wrote it with the intention that Aretha should record it (hence the #Beatles, since more people might listen with that tag). She sat on it for a little while, then got a cease and desist letter from the Beatles, since they now planned on releasing it. I wish they would have let her have it. Her version is awesome, and I think Let It Be was a terrible album to end a great career on, what with Spector turning it into a huge "wall of sound" turd. They should have sent him to jail for vandalism at the time, then that pretty young model might still be alive today! Anyway, today is Aretha's 70th birthday. Enjoy the tune!
I was picking up a bunch of stuff at the store today and heard the same thing. Ann Delisi's show?
She played a track from her 1971 Live at the Filmore West recording. Ray Charles was in the audience, she spotted him, and brought him up to sing Spirit in the Dark. Amazing. Ok, I'm posting it...

I love this version, it's gorgeous. Glad you posted it, I had never heard it before. I also love the Let It Be/Spector rant. There aren't a whole lot of people that disagree. You should DEFINITELY read that book I recommended now. It isn't that kind to Spector in the end.
