Leave it to the empire to find a way to evil retrofit them.
Seriously though, the boom-box was essentially the first "personal" music listening apparatus that was easily transportable. It was one of the first entertainment driven personal mobile technology. That's some huge stuff. People had the same (if not more) intimate connection with their boom-box as they now have with their phones. They put stickers on them and carried tapes with them that "defined" who they were as individuals. It seems like a silly thing now, but it wasn't.... it was revolutionary.

For me it all started here: http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Vintage-Fisher-Price-Cassette-Tape-De...
I used to walk around my neighborhood at 8 years old listing to Lisense to Ill. Fishing pole in one hand and my little boombox in the other, blaring "Paul Revere".

When I was in 3rd grade I was kicked out of the classroom for singing that song. I really didn't pay much attention to the meaning of the lyrics. My wife and I exist on equal grounds regarding all things domestic. I do my own laundry and dishes .... and in the bathroom.
