I saw on one of the intro threads that the button on the left is not an upvoteāit shares that post with whoever is following you. Does it work that way for comments, or is that more like an upvote, where it doesn't share with anyone, just moves it up in the thread?
With comments its more like what you are used to with an up vote. It raises it in the comment threads. Good question though and welcome to Hubski. Check out the Primer Page for more info. Edit: Also, I like your username. I'm taking violin lessons with my 4 year old daughter. Had one today.
Great idea to take lessons with your daughter! My Mom began taking lessons with my sister and I when we started at age 5. It made it much easier for her to help us practice when she had some idea what was supposed to be happening. And while she didn't keep up with playing violin, my siblings and I did (now I'm in college, and can play almost anything I want to be able to play).
We are taking suzuki method. I am a musician and I can play most stringed instruments if you give me enough time to mess around with them, but I've never played a bowed instrument. I'm so excited to be learning. My daughter is only 4 years old, but she's doing a great job. I have no doubt that by the time she's 6, she'll have surpassed my violin playing skills. Glad you are still playing. You really, REALLY ought to join in on our #hubskioriginalmusicclub, we don't have a violinist. It's a progressive song recording project. You can hear a bunch of them here, but there are many more: Get in on it!
That's interesting. Chatter currently has comments from the people that you follow, comments on posts that you have made, and badged comments. I don't know why I haven't considered until just now that chatter have comments that are shared by people that you follow. That would make the comment upvote into a share of sorts. Also it might go some way to addressing the issue that keifermiller stated below:The chatter page is nice, but I'd like to see more. I feel like there are lots of interesting conversations that I missed because they weren't badged, and I didn't find the post they happened under interesting enough to click.
I can't speak on the mechanics, but I feel like that mentality is absent from comments. At least for me. Clicking the hub on a post feels like sharing, but comments? Totally feels like an anonymous vote. I don't really make a distinction between the mechanics for comments on reddit and comments on hubski.
the fact that you can't remove hubs, or "downvote", helps remove that mentality. Also, the continuous efforts of users to have quality content and quality discussion is a lynch-pin.
Trying to nail down better how I feel about comment hubwheels: But if I go to https://hubski.com/user?id=coffeesp00ns , I see both shared and submitted posts. Comments? Just submitted. When I'm scanning over the comments for a post, I don't see which comments people I'm following thought were interesting. I find variably full hubs. The chatter page is nice, but I'd like to see more. I feel like there are lots of interesting conversations that I missed because they weren't badged, and I didn't find the post they happened under interesting enough to click. The culture around the button might be different, but the button itself feels the same to me. I might try and vote up comments in a less knee jerk way on hubski, but I still think in terms of voting.
a note about chatter and global: You can, in the mid-upper right corner, see a filter for amount of Hubspokes (is that what we're calling them these days? catchy names are mostly irrelevant). This also works for #tags. Want to explore conversations you might have missed? all three of these are great places to go. Another cool note is that you can see who shared that post, and who shared it with you, by clicking on the number next to "Shared By" on the post's page. I generally agree with your sentiment regarding comment shares - Most of the differences come from user mindset. However (and I preface this by saying I'm not a coder or on the hubski team), I have noticed that new and rising comments are given more preference in on-page order than highly spoked comments are. Also, after 8 spokes, the amount of shares is visually irrelevant. This helps remove the psychology of "winning" opinions, or "winning" numbers of votes - after a certain point, it's all the same. Of course, if you want to get rid of all of that information, you can just use Zen Mode.
