Personally, I don't think polygamy would be legal for tax reasons. I think a lot of people underestimate the power of bureaucracy - the rule of unelected clerks and forms. The amount of forms and shifts it would create in the tax and immigration systems is unimaginable. It will be stopped by the IRS, even if there was a great civil right push for it.
I think that talking about polygamy because of the recent decision to allow same sex couples the right to marry is insulting. Being a polygamist is absolutely, without a doubt a choice. Being homosexual, in my opinion, is not. Jon Stewart riffs on this a bit here: This is exactly the kind of hyperbolic "next step" that the right wingers are hoping for. This completely de-legitimizes the human rights and equal rights nature of the battle that was just won.
Gay marriage has been the fight of this generation, I wonder if polygamy will be the fight of the next? While I do agree that consenting adults should be able to do what they wish so long as nobody is harmed the issue I take with polygamy is that I think it will be disproportionate in the male:female ratio. If this is true then I think it's rather harmful to society as a whole.
