Fuck Paul. Long Live Ringo. All four of those guys, especially on the earlier tunes, knew how to play together. it's the most important thing you can do as a band. It's like chamber music.
They knight you for the income to the Crown. John left the UK, and the other two never made as much money after the Beatles as Paul. As goofy as a lot of Wings albums are, he made a lot of them and they had hits. Mull this one: Sir Bob Geldof. He's Irish! (Republic, not Northern.) They knighted him for the revenue of Live Aid.
Being from small town, USA, I admit my ignorance regarding such manners. I always presumed that knighthood had something to with social stature, dedication to the arts, bravery or positive contributions to society maybe. As with LiveAid, I thought it was due to the charitable nature of the thing. Learning that it is simply a matter recognizing someone's generation of revenue & less noble than I thought is disappointing. It seems so...American? to me, somehow.
Im not sure that it sounds so "American." When have any of us been celebrated for the taxes we pay the IRS? I didn't realize that knighthood was tied to the money one brought to the crown either. Thanks pseydtonne
I meant that knighthood being less noble and more about the cash seems, in my mind, like something we might have come up with, being that our whole culture seems so to revolve around the dollar. I was referencing my mistaken ideas about the knighthood -vs- the reality that knights service isn't some high-minded noble position, so much as a recognition of raking in alot of cash.
Ringo is my least favorite Beatle. I know it's not a super popular opinion, but the reason everyone know how to play his stuff is because it's basic and he had something like a five piece set and everyone drummers like Dave grohl are epic. I love some of the Beatles music, but to me Paul, George, and John we're imagine, while my guitar gently weeps and Eleanor rigby. Whereas, ringo was yellow submarine.
You're comparing songwriting skills and in that case there is no comparison between Ringonand his band mates. Regarding his drumming though, it's iconic for a good reason, Ringo is the ultimate when it comes to suiting the song. I used to play with a drummer named Dan Piccolo, fantastic player, that used to say that he wanted his drumming to sound "inevitable. -like that is the only possible beat or fill that could be in that song." To me, Ringo's drumming is inevitable. The example they give of "Come Together" is a good one to demonstrate this.
Songwriting skills and musicianship. He actually wasn't a terrible drumline writer, just used a very simple kit to make very simple beats that went along with the catchy Beatles songs. I'm willing to bet if you stuck him in any other band, we would never have heard of him, whereas all the other Beatles probably would've made it anyway. Granted the connection and fluidity with the band as a whole I don't think would've been the same without ringo, I still feel like was the kid brother in the situation.
He stood out in "Rory Storm and the Hurricanes." The other Beatles would talk about how he came to be in the band. One time Pete Best couldn't make a show and Ringo stood in. Paul, John and George all looked at each other in amazement because of how well he fit in each song. With songwriting like that, all a drummer can do is fuck it up. He enhanced them. I'm a fan. There was a funny article a while back from a guy that hates Paul. He asserted that the Beatles are dying in reverse order of talent. He finished with, "if I were Ringo, I'd be scared."
Lol about the article. I think he fit the Beatles songwriting style for sure. Great chemistry with the band. He just my least favorite of the bunch. As I stated before, it's an unpopular opinion which can be risky to post because of peoples attachment to the Beatles. Not all of their songs were good, I would lean towards saying more of them are bad/mediocre, than good/epic. To clarify, I love the Beatles, they had some amazing songs, i just feel like they(especially ringo) get put on this pedestal when they were just a band that wrote good and bad songs. They made a ton of music, so it's hard to be all one way or the other. Also I feel like their strongpoint was songwriting, not musicianship. Especially In the beginning, they barely knew how to play their instruments.
Thanks for the post. Iconic drummer no doubt. I love that they all know how to play his songs. I feel like the Beatles are great to learn the drums to.
Ringo's drumming on "Plastic Ono Band" is my favorite. He's great all the time but that is the album in which I know how's drumming every song. Much of it is super simple but he puts an intensity and drive behind every song. Phil Spector and Lennon had a lot to do with it as well I'm sure.
Great album. Didn't know that was him. The Well, well, well lead in has got to be the grimiest lick ever created.
Yes. It's one hell of a gesture. It's such a beautiful song and then "Cookie." It's sort of the ultimate, "this is my song and I'll do whatever the fuck I want," moment.
Holy crap. I'm not even a fan of Grohl, but I have to say, that article is the literary embodiment of this picture.
