Any recommendations like this from anyone else?
I'm also a big fan of Winsor McCay
Check out his work on Jodarowsky's Dune. You'd probably also like Jacek Yerka You might also like Michael Parkes.
Wow. Thanks for the recommendations. After looking at the art the Yerka and Parkes' work don't connect with me as much as the Moebius work. I don't know... I'm a sucker for illustration, hence the McCay shoutout. Is it safe to assume you like the other artists? If so, what do you like about them? Basically, sell me on them. :-)
...yeah, not feelin' it. I'm of the opinion that you either like art or you don't. I'm not a sucker for line art; two of my friends are storyboard artists and one of them drew for DC forever. Moebius is pretty clever as far as narrative but as artists go - even in the comic space - I think lotsa guys trump him.
I watched Jodorowsky's Dune and it simultaneously looked like the greatest thing ever while convincing me that Jodorowsky is, well, maybe not a nut-job but an incredibly charismatic and I guess unstable person. The entire thing with Salvador Dali was surreal. Amazing documentary. I don't have any suggestions, I like Moebius a lot and will have to check out your suggestions.
Cool stuff. Very futuristic, but not distopian. It's positive. What is this style/genre called?
The works being showcased here are mostly Giraud's work for Metal Hurlant. He's a comic artist. A good place to start is Airtight Garage. Moebius is definitely one of the more positive artists in the field; other similar artists are Enki Bilal, Juan Gimenez and Hajime Sorayama. Do not do a google search for Sorayama at work.
You weren't kidding. >_> I'm gonna go consider something banal and innocuous for a bit.. I liked the Gimenez stuff a lot. Highly detailed and fantastic in it's scope and setting. If you haven't checked out Kim Jung Gi, I'd strongly recommend him...
