Favourite genre of music? shit... that is such a hard choice. Can I narrow it to 3? These are all current favourites Classical Music: Joel Quarrington's Garden Scene Folk: Matthew Fowler Beginning Rock (as if it could really be a single genre): Against Me! Transgender Dysphoria Blue
I love Against Me!! My favorite album of theirs is Reinventing Axl Rose. It's just so raw and full of emotion.
I have quite a diverse taste in music, however it basically stems from my love of metal, in particular, progressive/power, speed, symphonic power metal etc. My diversity lends itself to classical, choral, even opera. Not something I listen to all that often, however they are on my Pandora playlist. So, favourite genre(s) and album(s): Progressive Metal
Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 2 Power Metal
Edguy - Theater of Salvation Progressive Rock
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon Music is a definite outlet for me, these are simply some albums in my collection I find myself going back to on a very frequent basis.
I have a few favorite genres but the top is probably punk (not that Blink-182/Sum 41 garbage, stuff like Propagandhi and Dead Kennedys). I also love metal and I'm getting more and more into an EDM subgenre called trap, which is basically the very stereotypical rave music. My favorite punk album is definitely Adolescents self-titled album.
But my favorite album of any genre is probably The Complexity Of Light by Children Of Nova, a prog-metal band.
I'd have to say either electronic or metalcore. For electronic, my favorite album is probably Daft Punk's Random Access Memories or Monstercat 017 - Ascension. For metalcore, my favorite album is Ice Nine Kill's Safe is Just a Shadow.
I have a soft spot for southern rock like, The Allmans, Marshall Tucker, and J.J. Cale. All-time fav album in this genre has got to be Little Feat's "Waiting for Columbus" - here's a tasty slice :
My favourite all-encompasing genre is metal. Sometimes I prefer power metal, and the next day I prefer death, and then thrash and so on, so I don't really have a favourite subgenre. My favourite album is a hard question though, but I think Metallica's Ride the Lightning is my all time favourite, despite not listening to it regularly.
I'm an industrial guy. Album I think left side of the Fragile.
Album? Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. Off of which my favorite song is The Boxer: My favorite song isn't on that album, though. Trouble by Cat Stevens (this is that scene from Harold & Maude.):
Genre? Whatever contains those songs.
Yes. I agree completely. Cat Stevens is demanding that the trouble leave him alone. Elliott is just kind of resigned to the fact that it's not going anywhere, but he makes a plea anyway. Both are amazing. The whole Harold and Maude soundtrack is amazing. Everyone should watch that movie.
I'm a big fan of Cat/Yusuf but I've never heard this song! Cheers for the link it's a great song
I'm not good with the whole "genre" thing. I'm just not too up to speed on what different genres are. For the life of me I'm still not sure what constitutes "goth" for example. I was at a place getting a taco the other day and overheard a woman describing this goth band that she liked called, "New Order." -Hmm... okay. I guess I like rock and roll, but I'm particularly fond of rock bands with strong singer/songwriters at the helm. I dig Wilco, The Shins and Belle & Sebastian. Here are tracks from each that I particularly enjoy:
The thing with goth is that they never really had a defining genera, so they're often identified with various music from the 80's. Based on your like of a strong singer/songwriter have you tried looking into folk music? That's a hallmark of the genera, and I feel like the 3 bands you linked to, especially Belle & Sebastian are very folk inspired.
Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of most "folk-music." I get pretty bored with that genre. It's either too heavy handed, sentimental, too political or just boring to me. That's a VERY broad generalization of the genre. Obviously there is some great folk music that I dig. I tend to like music that involves a band and not just a guitar and a voice. I realize that much of the music I adore is folk inspired. My OWN music is folk inspired, but I always add full instrumentation. Thanks for the comment. I still am no closer to understanding what is and is not goth though :)
One band you might like to check out is the Mountain Goats. Very great writing, very passionate, and they do stuff of all kinds. Some of it's happy and triumphant, other is sad and depressing, and a whole lot of it is angry. He seems to have a lot of metal/punk influence in terms of passion, but is softer in sound and low-fi in terms of instruments. My favorite albums include The Sunset Tree, Transcendental Youth, All Hail West Texas, and Zopilote Machine. Here's a Tiny Desk Concert performance.
I guess I was more trying to say goth is a fashion movement without a defining musicial genera. Kind of like hipsters now. There's a unifying fashion, but in general you can't point to an hipster bands that aren't also better defined by a different musical style like folk or rock or whatever. I'm not sure that really clears it up, but that's always how I've understood it. And then people kind of use it as a pejorative to describe music from that time period they don't like.
