because of the beer post earlier today and this one
Putting together a playlist to represent my time in Ohio. Huey Lewis and the News - Heart of Rock and Roll - because I love Huey Lewis and the News, and because the Heart of Rock and Roll is in Cleveland (though I never went. I'm cheap.) Dolly Parton - Jolene - A great friend i met here reintroduced me to Classic country and rockabilly. He's a fantastic guy, and I loved playing with him in the bass section (as well as going out to see him play in country bands in bars). Death Cab for Cutie - Tiny Vessels - Any time I headed north on Rt. 8, I passed by the turn off for Silver Lake, OH. Every time, this song came to mind. It definitely reminds me of a time in my life when I was a lot less together as a person. CSNY - Ohio - I lived a hop skip and a jump from Kent State. my NPR station was WKSU. Beethoven - Symphony no 6 "Pastorale" - I head the Cleveland Orchestra play this live earlier this year. It both completely blew my mind, and reminded me that even the best orchestral musicians are human. There's a section, referred to as the "Storm" section, which is notorious as being pretty much impossible on the bass, and mostly for effect rather than playing the actual notes. To see the bass section of the CO come to that section and fuck it up like every other bass section ever was a humanizing experience for me. Antonin Dvorak -Symphony 9 "From the New World" - I got to play this while here doing my master's degree. One of the most singularly beautiful pieces of music, especially the 2nd mvt. Of course, it's also one of those piece which film score composers harvest from liberally - You'll no doubt have heard some variation of the opening movement's fortissimo chords, and you'll hear the Jaws theme at the beginning of the fourth. There's also a really cool "walking bass line" after the famous melody in the second movement. that's what I have so far. I'm sure I'll expand on it. add in some Against Me!, some solo bass music.
Have you seen the Big Star documentary? Here is the trailer. Check it out:
