We need to focus far more on "prison as rehabilitation" rather than "prison as retribution", especially when it comes to how often people re-offend when the justice system is focused far more on retribution. Committing felonies generally means that any company which performs background checks will not hire you. This will reduce your employment and career opportunities considerably. And when you can't provide for yourself? Your only option is to turn back to crime!
