They should absolve people of their college debt if they do something like 5 years of community work. Or have the debt be interest free for as long as you work in such programs. I'm sure we would have many more people getting involved, helping others and doing work they actually enjoy doing if that was the case.
There are programs like that. Teach for America is an example, but I think the time for those are about 10-15 years in which time debt could more than likely have been paid off earlier. Also, it may not be in a field the person is best suited for. While in AmeriCorps we get loan forbearance and interest taken care of of, but only for government loans. I've found it best to make payments regardless and I took care of the interest before my first payment was actually due.
