Mother nature is sweet, but let's not disparage aeronautic engineers too much. There's a big difference between flying something that's half a cm in diameter vs. 50m for a jet. Apples and oranges.

True enough. But at half a centimeter, this thing has an on-board computer that takes care of navigation, refueling and reproduction too. :)

What I want to know is how their wings fold and unfold. I wonder if there is some sort of hydraulic system that creates rigidity?

Spiders' legs are extended by hydraulic pressure; hence the way they curl up when they die.
